At the age of 15 Bruckner was given her first lead role in the independent movie Blue Car (2002) in which she played the role of a student at high school who is who was involved in a relationship with her teacher, played by David Strathairn. Film critic Roger Ebert wrote that Bruckner negotiates this difficult script with a complete confidence. Bruckner received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for "Best Female Lead" for this character. Her family consisted of three siblings: two sisters and a brother. Her routine was to learn Hungarian to keep her fluency. Bruckner is a Californian from Hollywood born daughter of a Hungarian father and a Russian mother. Her maternal grandparents were German. They came into contact in Hungary. They emigrated to the U.S. through an Italian refugee camp. There is a sister and a brother.
